Texas

Made by members of the Brenham Friendship Quilt Guild

The Washington County, Texas quilt block features the Texas flag set within the outline of the state, with a gold star showing the county’s location. This design, along with the caption, “Birthplace of Texas,” highlights the central role Washington County played in the early history of Texas. Settled by colonists in the 1820s, the county was the site where the Texas Declaration of Independence was signed on March 2, 1836, and where the provisional government operated during the Texas Revolution. Today, the Washington-on-the-Brazos State Historic Site preserves and interprets life during the revolution and the Republic era, while numerous locations across the county honor its rich social and political history.
