Nebraska
On February 22, 1855, the Nebraska Territorial Legislature officially named Washington County in honor of the birthday of President George Washington. Washington County is home to the first fort built west of the Missouri River – Fort Atkinson – located at Fort Calhoun where Lewis and Clark are believed to have held their first council with Native American tribes.
The historic Lincoln Highway traverses Washington County.
The Washington County Courthouse was built in 1889 – 91 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and featured and the center of our block.
The square was submitted by Margaret Hanson of Blair, NE.
