North Carolina
Many thanks to the very talented Jill Manring who designed and created a quilt square to represent our Washington County in the Washingtons United quilt project.
Her words convey essential details about our location, events that have shaped our history, and what Washington County is known for today. The quilt square depicting the Roanoke River Lighthouse is a symbol that links the past to the present. The Roanoke River Lighthouse was selected as the design for our quilt block because it played a vital role in early trade, regional commerce and the Underground Railroad in Washington County, NC. The lighthouse was first illuminated in 1867 at the mouth of the Roanoke River. A replica of the original lighthouse is a prominent feature in the county seat of Plymouth.
Washington County, NC is a destination for outdoor adventure, logging, agriculture and ecotourism including fishing, hunting, boating, birdwatching, nature photography and the National Black Bear Festival. We are proud to be part of the Washingtons Unite Quilting Collaboration!
