Florida
The square was designed and made by Gweneth Collins, a long-time historical society member. Washington County, FL was once known as the Watermelon Capital of the world and they still host the Panhandle Watermelon Fest every June. The railroad was very important to the county’s development and, at one time, river and steam boats carried, not only passangers, but turpentine, cotton, timber, and other goods on the Choctawhatchee River and Holmes Creek. The axe represents the Native Americans in the area (Creek by tribe). It is also a “nod” to George Washington and the cherry tree. In 2025 the county celebrated their Bicentennial, thus 1825 on the tail.
